Sign Language for Babies

sign language for babies

Realising that there was no integrated baby sign language programme for South African families, Wits University and the Awethu Project set out to create a comprehensive set of tools based on the core principles of language development in early childhood. is a communication programme – ‘One of its kind in South Africa’ – that helps babies develop their language skills through singing, signing and reading.

Our products have been designed under the guidance of a speech and language pathologist.

“As human beings, no matter where we live, what we do, or what age we are – we all have one thing in common.

From the moment we wake in the morning, until we go to sleep, we are communicating, connecting and sharing. We need to do this not only in order to learn and access opportunities, but also because it makes us feel good.” – Loren Stow
